Hijacked Oil Tanker Anchored Off Somlia

The Saudi Oil tanker hijacked in the Indian Ocean is believed to be anchored off the coast of Somalia. The 25 crew on board are said to be safe.

The tanker is said to be the largest tanker ever hijacked, with a cargo of over 2m barrels (a quarter of Saudi Arabia's daily output) worth more than $100m. Pirates have seized over 90 ships in the area, recently capturing a cargo ship carrying wheat intended for Iran, as well as a fishing vessel. The fishing vessel carried a crew of 12, but the owner lost contact when the ship was hijacked.

The Saudi ship owned by Aramco, named the Sirius Star, was seized just off the Kenyan coast in an unprecedented attack. Vela issued a statement that the company now believed the ship had been anchored just off the Port of Harardhere.

Nato have said that they have no plans to divert any of their three warships from the Gulf of Aden. The US Navy's 5th fleet also said that it also did not expect to send any ships to intercept the oil tanker.

Vela international have mobilised a response team to ensure the safe return of the vessel and the crew. A multinational task force that was sent to the region earlier this year have been unable to stop the piracy. It is believed that some of the pirates involved were very well trained.

"Once they get to a point where they can board, it becomes very difficult to get them off, because, clearly, now they hold hostages,"

14 vessels including the Ukrainian freighter MV Faina remain captive in Somalia with over 268 crew being held hostage.
