UK high street sales have fallen lower than expected in October. Following September's drop of 0.4%, it was predicted that October would see a fall of 0.9%. But figures from the Office for National statistics have shown only a drop of 0.1%.
A number of retailers are now holding sales before Christmas in order to boost spending. Whilst food sales rose by 1% in October, non food sales dropped by 1.1%, with household goods falling 1.5%, along with a 3.4% fall in clothing sales.
It is believed that some consumers will wait for the sales to buy goods that they would have paid full prices for, cutting profits rather than boosting them.
As a number of retailers come under heavy pressure this Christmas, Woolworths has taken huge loses and is believed to be in talks to sell its 800+ stores for only £1.
